Purpose
The goal of the EdTech Leadership Digital Video Production Institute is to provide CTAP Region 3 EdTech leaders with the equipment, knowledge, and skills to shoot and produce professional quality video on subjects and topics that are instructional in nature and beneficial to other educators. Teachers often lack models of what effective instruction, classroom management, technology integration, teaching with State adopted curriculum materials, and other subjects look like in the classroom. Through work in small project teams, you will learn planning, lighting, framing and composition, shooting, and audio techniques. The goals of this institute are to 1) to provide edtech leaders with advanced skills in video production and editing, and 2) produce videos depicting effective instructional practices that can be used in Region 3 staff development and instructional programs. This web site is a work in progress and will be used to support the edtech leaders that are participating in this institute.
Upon successful completion of this institute, participants will be able to:
- Analyze digital video/audio/lighting requirements for a classroom or professional development need
- Operate a digital video camera and other video production equipment
- Create a video program(s) for an identified instructional/staff development need
- Collaborate with another participant to produce a 5-10 minute video program for a staff development need
- Understand the fundamental artistic and technical aspects of digital video and audio production
- With another participant, produce a 5-10 minute instructional staff development video program paying attention to:
- Appropriate lighting techniques for good exposure
- Composing various video images at various angles/distances and using a variety of shot types and cutaways
- Recording high quality audio tracks
- Effective video camera techniques

Videography for Educators
http://ali.apple.com/ali_sites/ali/exhibits/1000019/
The Videography for Educators exhibit features tips and techniques to assist in the creation of quality video products. The exhibit provides example planning documents and video examples to illustrate concepts and skills. The content assumes you are already learning the mechanics of iMovie 3 or Final Cut Pro, are familiar with the fundamentals of operating your camcorder, and are ready to learn the art of videography. The concepts, skills, and examples are presented in a manner relevant to classroom teachers. This exhibit will continue to grow as new materials are created by exhibit authors in the Apple Learning Interchange that represent specific tips and techniques.

The Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds states that your screen should be divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. When you shoot your video and follow this rule, you should place your key subject elements at or along the intersection of those lines. Your frames will be more interesting if the subject is off center and on one of the horizontal or vertical lines. The most interesting place for your subject is at the intersection of these lines.
Headroom
Headroom refers to the amount of space between your subject and the top of the frame. Leaving too much headroom (blank space above the subjects head) will make your subject look small and unimportant. When filming, pay attention to the location in the frame of the persons eyes, mouth and chin. Follow the rule of thirds and place the eyes on the upper third line.
Lead Space
Lead space refers to the space in front of your subject. Leave extra "lead space" in front of your subject in the direction they are looking. If your subject is moving, leave even more space in front of them so it doesn't appear as if they are moving into the edge of your frame.
